Food Waste Across Africa

Food waste is a continent-wide problem, and Kenya feels it acutely. Roughly 40% of food is wasted in Kenya (≈10M metric tons), with major financial and social costs. These snapshots from five African countries show the scale of the issue we’re tackling at Msossi.

Kenya

Kenya discards around 10 million metric tons of food annually, about 40% of all food produced. This has devastating consequences as 14.2 million households face food insecurity, while businesses lose 72 billion KSh directly and 373 billion KSh indirectly through inefficiencies. The opportunity to turn surplus food into affordable meals is clear, and Msossi is stepping in to make it happen.

South Africa

South Africa wastes approximately 10.3 million metric tons of food every year, with 18% lost at the consumption stage, meaning food is purchased but never eaten. This impacts more than 9.34 million food-insecure people and translates to roughly $1 billion USD in economic losses annually. Reducing this waste would not only lower food prices but also benefit retailers and the environment.

Nigeria

Nigeria wastes around 40% of all food produced, which translates to tens of millions of tons every year. This level of waste could feed an estimated 40 million people annually, highlighting the scale of inefficiencies in the food supply chain. Post-harvest losses, inadequate storage, and lack of distribution infrastructure drive this problem, costing businesses revenue and exacerbating food insecurity despite the country’s vast agricultural output.

Uganda

Uganda experiences significant food losses, particularly in dairy. The country produces about 37.9 million litres of milk annually, yet consumption accounts for only 800 million litres, leaving an estimated 4.5 billion litres at risk of waste due to poor handling, insufficient cold-chain logistics, and limited market access. This waste not only impacts farmers’ livelihoods but also prevents affordable nutrition from reaching vulnerable communities.

Algeria

In Algeria, an estimated 67% of municipal garbage is composed of food waste, a figure among the highest in Africa. Rapid urbanisation, insufficient waste management infrastructure, and inefficient retail practices contribute to massive losses. While much of this food is still edible, it ends up in landfills, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and missing the opportunity to feed millions of Algerians struggling with rising food costs.
